Stainless steel coupons (type 304, 5 2 cm, no. 4 finish)prepared as described by Ryu and Beuchat (2005) were used asa model of this study. Stainless steel coupons were sonicated(Model VCX 130, Sonics & Materials Inc., Newtown, Ct., USA) ina 15% phosphoric acid solution at 80
C for 20 min, rinsed withdistilled water, sonicated in an alkaline detergent solution (FS ProChlor; Zep, Atlanta, Ga.) at 80
C for 20 min, and then rinsed againwith distilled water. Washed stainless steel coupons were dried,and then autoclaved at 121
C for 15 min in covered glass beakers.
