في عام 1966 ميلادي دعت العائلة الشيخ زايد , ليكون حاكما لإمارة ابوظبي فكانت تلك المهمة الاقوى له . ومنذ ذلك الحين انصرف همه الى توحيد القبائل و البلاد , فبذل جهدا كبيرا الى ان رفرف علم واحد في 2 ديسمبر عام 1971 ميلادي معلنا قيام دولة الامارات العربية المتحدة .
