تنبني نظرية ما بعد الاستعمار في مجال الحقل الثقافي بصفة عامة وحقل النقد الأدبي بصفة خاصة على مجموعة من المرتكزات الفكرية والمنهجية، ويمكن حصرها في المكونات والعناصر التالية:

 1- فهم ثنائية الشرق والغرب: تحاول نظرية ما بعد الاستعمار فهم الشرق والغرب فهما حقيقيا، وذلك برصد العلاقات التفاعلية التي توجد بينهما سواء أكانت تلك العلاقات إيجابية مبنية على التسامح والتفاهم والتعايش أم مبنية على العدوان والصراع الجدلي والصدام الحضاري
