وقد كان العلماء يعتقدون أن المجرات تشكلت في وقت حديث نسبيا من تاريخ الكون إلا ان بعض العلماء البريطانيين أعلنوا أنهم اكتشفوا عددا من المجرات الشديدة الحُمرة مما يعني أن تلك المجرات كانت موجودة بالفعل منذ نحو عشرة مليارات عاما، عندما كان الكون أصغر بست مرات مما هو عليه الآن.
