تستخدم طريقة سعر التجزئة غالباً بمعرفة المنشآت التى تمارس نشاط تجارة التجزئة وذلك لقياس تكلفة المخزون الذى يتكون من بنود كثيرة العدد وسريعة التغير وذات هوامش ربحية متماثلة وحيث يتعذر من الناحية العملية استخدام طرق أخرى لقياس تكلفتها. وطبقاً لهذه الطريقة يتم تحديد تكلفة المخزون عن طريق تخفيض القيمة البيعية للمخزون بنسبة هامش ربح ملائمة.
