في قديم الزمان عاش نبي كريم هو داوود عليه السلام أحد أنبياء الله الذين يمتد نسبهم إلى يعقوب عليه السلام وداوود هو والد سليمان عليهما السلام
في الزمان القديم كان هناك ملك يدعى طالوت وكان ملكا على بني إسرائيل وكان سيدنا داوود من بني إسرائيل فأمر طالوت بني إسرائيل بالخروج لقتال جالوت وجنوده وكان جالوت هذا قائدا قويا وشديد البأس وفي الطريق إلى المعركة كان الكثيرون من بني إسرائيل في خوف شديد من المواجهة
عندما التقى الجمعان طلب جالوت أن يخرج له مقاتل من بني إسرائيل للمبارزة فهابه الناس
لم يخرج له أحد لشدة بأسه وقوته واستبد الخوف بالجميع فطلب داوود عليه السلام من طالوت أن يسمح له بملاقاة جالوت
أعجبت طالوت شجاعة سيدنا داوود وأمر له بدرع حتى يرتديه ولكن سيدنا داوود لم يعرف أن يمشي بهذا الدرع فخلعه وتقدم بعصاه وخمسة أحجار قام بإنتقائها من الوادي ومعه مقلاعه إلى جالوت
