ولد محمد يونس يوم 28 يونيوعام 1940 في قرية باثوا.بعد تخرجه، انضم محمد يونس إلى مكتب الاقتصاد كمساعد باحث مع باحثو الاقتصاد ثم تم تعيينه محاضراً في الاقتصاد في كلية شيتاغونغ في عام 1961. وأنشأ خلال هذه الفترة مصنعاً للتعبئة والتغليف.
في عام 1965 حصل على منحة من مؤسسة فولبرايت لدراسة الدكتوراه في جامعة فاندربيلت بولاية تينيسي الأمريكية حيث اصبح رئيسًا لقسم الاقتصاد في جامعة شيتاجونج.حصل محمد يونس على جائزة نوبل للسلام سنة 2006 وهو محمد يونس أول بنغالي يحصل على جائزة نوبل وهو واحد من سبعة أشخاص فازوا بجائزة نوبل للسلام ووسام الحرية الرئاسي والميدالية الذهبية للكونغرس.
