في كتاب السيرة الذاتية لستيف جوبز الذي نشره الكاتب الصحفي وولتر ايزكسون، يوضح جوبز فيه كيفية اختيار هذه التسمية لشركته “ابل”، فيقول: “تم إطلاق اسم ابل على الشركة لأن أكل التفاح (ابل) حمية محببة إلى قلب ستيف جوبز. وأثناء عودته ذات يوم من بستان للتفاح خطرت بباله فكرة أن كلمة ابل ستكون جذابة جدا وسهلة الحفظ وليست لفظا صعبا، وسترسخ في الذهن بسرعة، فقرر أن يكون اسم الشركة ابل.

من ناحيته أكد صديقه وزميله في بداية مشواره في تأسيس شركة أبل، العبقري الآخر ستيف وزنياك، هذه المعلومة وذلك خلال حوار معه تم تصويره في مطلع عام 2010
