بيوت الشباب هي أماكن وبيوت مجهزة بشكل مريح وتتميز بتجهيزات متعددة. فبالإضافة إلى غرف المبيت والمطعم هناك صالات وملاعب لممارسة معظم الأنشطة الثقافية و الاجتماعية و الرياضية ، و هي معدة لاستقبال الشباب من كل أنحاء العالم وذلك خلال سفرياتهم و رحلاتهم و يتوافر فيها المناخ الملائم والبرامج المناسبة لتحقيق التعارف والتعاون بينهم وبين شباب الدول الأخرى و مد جسور الصداقة والثقة فيما بينهم وتشجيعهم على الترحال والسفر و تنمية المعارف لدى الشباب وتدريبهم على الاعتماد على النفس والنظام والمشاركة في الخدمة العامة والعمل الجماعي .

وقد بدأت فكرة حركة بيوت الشباب مع بداية القرن العشرين في ذهن معلم ألماني يدعى ( ريتشارد شيرمان ). وجد شيرمان في " الرحلات المدرسية " العلاج الملائم للكثير من عيوب البرنامج العادي بطريقة لا يستطيع أي كتاب مدرسي أن يحققها . ولما اتسعت دائرة الرحلات اتضحت الحاجة إلى ضرورة تهيئة أماكن إقامة في مواقع الترحال وعلى مسافات متقاربة . وأنشئ أول بيت دائم للشباب في قرية (التنا ) عام 1909م في المدرسة التي كان يعمل بها ريتشارد شيرمان وكانت في الأصل قلعة قديمة .

وبدأت الحركة في الانتشار في معظم أنحاء أوروبا ثم انتقلت منها إلى جميع أنحاء العالم وفي أمستردام بهولندا وفي شهر أكتوبر عام 1932م عقد أول مؤتمر دولي لجمعيات بيوت الشباب حيث أنشئ الاتحاد الدولي لجمعيات بيوت الشباب بمشاركة إحدى عشر جمعية والتي بلغت الآن اكثر من 60 جمعية . فبانضمامك الى الجمعية العربية السعودية لبيوت الشباب وحصولك على العضوية أصبح بإمكانك التمتع بالسكن والمشاركة في البرامج المتاحة التي تنظمها بيوت الشباب محليا ودوليا حيث بلغت4000 بيت شباب حول العالم في أكثر من 80 بلدا
