توصّل فريق علمي أمريكي إلى إثبات الدليل العلمي على "سرطانية" مادة النكوتين التي كانت تعدّ إلى حدّ الأمس القريب مادة غير مسرطنة، رغم أنّ الاعتقاد السائد كان يرجّح ذلك من دون القطع به. وكشف الفريق الذي يرأسه البروفسور سريكومار شيلابان من جامعة جنوب فلوريدا أنّ الجسم البشري يحتوي على مستقبلات للنكوتين تمّ إطلاق الاسم العلمي nAChRs عليها وهذه المستقبلات توجد في الخلايا الرئوية المسرطنة، وهي تعدّ المفتاح الذي يستخدمه النكوتين للتسريع في عملية نموّ السرطان، وبذلك بات النيكوتين يصنّف على أنّه "مادة مسرطنة" وهو الأول من نوعه الذي يتمّ تصنيفه على هذه الشاكلة
