ضرب زلزال بقوة خمس درجات على مقياس ريختر فجر الأربعاء منطقة الشلف (غرب الجزائر)بدون أن يخلف ضحايا، كما أفاد مركز رصد الزلازل في الجزائر.

ونقلت الإذاعة الجزائرية عن مصالح الحماية المدنية أن الهزة الأرضية التي شعر بها سكان ولاية عين الدفلى المجاورة (160 كلم غرب الجزائر) وحتى سكان العاصمة الجزائرية "لم تسفر عن سقوط ضحايا ولا خسائر مادية". وأشار شهود عيان لوكالة فرنس برس أن الزلزال تسبب في حالة هلع وسط سكان الساحل الغربي الجزائري، وفر البعض منهم من منازلهم.

وشهدت منطقة الشلف زلزالا عنيفا في 10 أكتوبر 1980 بلغت قوته 7,1 درجة على سلم ريختر أسفر عن سقوط خمسة آلاف قتيل وتدمير كامل للمدينة وخسائر كبيرة في المناطق المحيطة بها. وقد أعيد بناء المدينة وفق هندسة مضادة للزلازل.
