تشتهر سريلانكا بانتاج الشاي والبن والمطاط وجوز الهند والأحجار الكريمة....وحاليا تشكل السياحة مصدر دخل آخر للبلد بعد القضاء على نمور التاميل.
كانت محتلة من قبل البرتغاليين ثم الهولنديين وأخيرا الإنجليز حيث حصلت على استقلالها في 1948
