يقول الدكتور جون سفرين من الجمعية الأمريكية لأطباء الأورام في المؤتمر السنوي في شيكاغو (2003) : إن التدخين سلاح الدمار الشامل الوحيد الذي يهدد البشرية عبر مختلف أنحاء الأرض. وقال مدير الجمعية الدكتور بول بونن: إن هدفنا النهائي هو عالم خال من التبغ والتدخين. ووفقاً لإحصائيات موثوقة فإن التدخين تسبب في ثلث الوفيات بالسرطان! وأشارت دراسة أعدتها الجمعية المذكورة إلى أن 30 مليون شخص ينضمون إلى قافلة المدخنين كلّ عام، ويتوقع الخبراء أن يموت قرابة النصف من أولئك بسبب عادة التدخين.
