يقع حي “بوكاب” في قلب مدينة كيب تاون، حيث نشأ في القرن 18 مع إحضار الهولنديين للعبيد من الهند وآسيا. في تلك الفترة المظلمة من تاريخ جنوب إفريقيا، منع المستعمرون العبيد من ارتداء الملابس الملونة فتمردوا على ذلك بطلاء منازلهم بهذه الألوان الجميلة.. ومع أن العبودية انتهت ولم يعد لها أثر في يومنا هذا، لا يزال سكان الحي محتفظين بهذا التقليد الجميل، وهم في غالبيتهم العظمي مسلمون (حوالي 90%) .

تجولت في الحي واستمتعت بمشاهدة ألوانه والصور التي وضعت على بعض نوافذه لتحكي قصص التعذيب والاستعباد، والرسومات التي تعبّر عن نهوض السكان من ركام العبودية ونهضتهم رغم كل ما عاناه أسلافهم.

يضم الحي أقدم مسجد في كيب تاون، والذي يحمل اسم “أول مسجد” Auwal Masjid. بني عام 1794 وكان اول مسجد في جنوب إفريقيا ولا زال حتى اليوم مفتوحاً يستقبل المصلين وتقام فيه حلقات تحفيظ القرآن .
