في عام 1839 لاحظ الفيزيائي الفرنسي ألكسندر إدموند أنه في حالة تعرض قطب كهربائي إلي الضوء بحيث يكون مغموس في محلول موصل فإنه ينتج تيارا كهربائى.
وفي عام 1941 تمكن المخترع الأمريكي روسل أوهل من تقديم الخلية الشمسية في شكلها الحديث – ولكن بكفاءة اقل مما هى عليها الان .
