غشاء المفاعل هو في الحقيقة مجرد سد تدفق مفاعل يحتوي على اسطوانة إضافي بعض المواد المسامية داخلها، مثل أنبوب داخل قشرة قذيفة وأنبوب مبادل حراري. هذه الاسطوانة الداخلية مسامية الغشاء الذي يعطي مفاعل غشاء اسمها.
