وقد بدأ السلطان الأشرف أبو النصر قايتباي بناء هذه القلعة في سنة 882 هـ وانتهى من بنائها سنة 884 هـ
تعد من أهم القلاع على ساحل البحر الأبيض المتوسط فقد اهتم بها سلاطين وحكام مصر على مر العصور التاريخية
