المسجد الاقصى الذي في القدس ومسجد قبة الصخرة تم بدء بناءهما في عهد عبدالملك بن مروان وأكتمل بناءه في عهد أبنه الوليد بعد ما طلب عبدالله بن الزبير من حججاج الشام خلعهم لولاية عبدالملك واعترافهم بولاية بن الزبير حيث اعلن كل منهما انه خليفة للمسلمين, لذا بنى عبدالملك هذا المسجد وامر اهل الشام بالحج اليه وبالفعل حجوا اليه وطافوا حول قبة الصخرة.
