في البداية قسم هابل المجرات إلى مجرات قزمة ومجرات عملاقة، وبعد دراسة صور للمجرات وجد أن هناك ثلاثة أنواع رئيسية من المجرات، لذا عدل التصنيف وقسمت تبعا للشكل المرئي لها، وهو الإهليجي والحلزوني والعدسي إضافة إلى شاذة المظهر. نوعين منهم تم تقسيمهم إلى مزيد من التصنيفات الفرعية طبقا للنظام الذي يعرف الآن بمخطط الشوكة. وقد وضع هابل في البداية هذا المخطط بمثابة تسلسل تطوري فضلا عن أنه تصنيفي :
