عزل Gessard بكتريا pseudomonas aeruginosa لاول مرة في عام 1882 من الجروح المتقيحة وأطلق عليها انذاك Bacillus pyocyaneas ثم سميت pyocyaneas Pseudomonas وفيمابعد سميت.aeruginosa P. (Wilson and Dowling , 1998 ( ، تنتمي هذه البكتريا الى اسرة Pseudomonadaceae التي تضم جنس Xanthomonas فضلا عن جنس Pseudomonas الذي يضم 76 نوعا （MacFaddin，2000）.تقسم في الوقت الحاضر الى خمس مجاميع اعتمادا على (rRNA/DNA) وان هناك اكثر من 20 نوعا من انواع Pseudomonas موجودة في العينات السريرية او الطبية الماخوذة من الانسان ومن امثلتها :-
