واكتشف العالم البريطاني جون والكر في العام 1826، عود الكبريت في مختبره عن طريق الصدفة، بعدما جفت مواد كيميائية على عود من الخشب كان يستخدمه لمزج أنواع مختلفة من هذه المواد. وتسبب هذه المواد بإشتعال النار عندما حاول والكر إزالتها عن عود الخشب.

وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن والكر بدأ بتسويق فكرة عود الكبريت منذ ذلك الوقت، ولكن الأعواد لم تكن مصنوعة من الخشب، بل من مادة الكرتون.
