ولد الشيخ زايد بن سلطان بن خليفة النهيان رحمه الله عام 1918 , و عاش طفولته برعاية والدته الشيخة سلامة بيت بطي القبيسي منتقلا بين قلعة الحصن في ابوظبي , و المنزل الثاني للعائلة في واحة البريمي بمدينة العين . بدأ رحلة التعليم في سن الخامسة حيث درس القران الكريم و الحديث الشريف و اصول الدين و اللغة العربية . قال عنه من عرفه : كان رحمه الله رجل فعل و حضور جذاب , يتصرف بهدوء و ثقة , قوي البدينة , عينين ذكيتين
